Threlkeld Church of England School (link to School site)
There has been schooling in the village since before 1659 when Anthony Gilbanks of Guardhouse in his will left £20 towards the salary of the schoolmaster.
Then teaching was in the church and that continued until 1776 when the church was rebuilt and a schoolroom built in Blease Road. Only boys were taught then - Reading, Writing and Number. In 1842 a second room was built above with an outside stair to teach the girls - Reading, Writing and Needlework. (How do you do needlework without being able to count stitches?) Other subjects including Navigation had been taught by individual schoolmasters.
In 1849 the assistant curate of the day Rev Arthur Emilius Hutton bought the present school site and arranged for the School to be built. That building has been expanded more than once.
