** This Anthony Gilbancke may have been the Anthony Gilbancke of Guardesse (Guardhouse) who, in 1659 in his will left, £20 towards the salary of the schoolmaster. That money still supports the school throught the Towngate Estate which was (partly) bought with that money in 1744.

Whereas heretofore that is to say on or about the sixteenth day of June in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred thirty five John Crosthwaite Elizabeth Robinson Richard Scott Gawyne Wilkinson Elizabeth Wilson Thomas Grave John Scott John Bancke John Wilkinson Thomas Todd Christopher Scott John Scott the elder Christopher Wood Thomas Cockbayne Robert Cockbayne Richard Todhunter William Pickeringe John Clemett the younger Thomas Todhunter James Hudson John Lamaman John Thompson Thomas Thompson Thomas Scott John Gaskarth John Todhunter Anthony Gilbancke Thomas Todhunter Christopher Hudson Thomas Todhunter the younger William Grave Thomas Williamson Janett Thompson Thomas Clemett Thomas Scott Thomas Thompson Thomas Handcocke Matthew Jackson Thomas Lamaman customary tenants of divers customary tenements parcel of the manor of Threlkeld in the County of Cumberland and John Atkinson John Crosthwaite of Scales John Lancaster Richard Jenkinson the younger John Wilkinson Thomas Hudson Christopher Gibson and Winifride Lamaman customary tenants of other tenements parcel also of the manor of Threlkeld and known by the name of cottagers complainants did exhibit their Bill of Complaint unto this most honourable Court of Chancery against Sir John Lowther knight and John Lowther his son defendants declaring by the same that whereas the complainants being customary tenants of customary tenements within the manor of Threlkeld and the defendants or the one of them lords or lord of the said manor of Threlkeld and proprietors or proprietor of the freehold estate thereof in fee there were in August then last past divers expressions declarations acknowledgements and confessions made by the plaintiffs and defendants touching the said customary tenements and the complainants there estate therein and touching their liberties freedoms and privileges in the same and in the waste common open and unenclosed ground of the said manor And touching the rent fines suites and services due for or in respect of the said customary tenements And touching divers usages and customs used within. the said manor and as well concerning the said manor and the lord or lords thereof as the said customary tenements and tenants thereof And that there were then also divers conclusions covenant and agreement made for and upon valuable considerations betwixt the defendants on the one part and the complainants on the other part touching their said customary tenements And the complainants by their bill further shewed that for the better manifestation of the premises and to the intent those conclusions and agreement might be duly observed and performed an indenture bipartite was made in August aforesaid betwixt the defendants on the one part and all the complainants except Winifride Lamaman on the other part with indorsement thereon touching the said Winifride and her customary tenement And in that indenture and endorsement all the said expressions declarations acknowledgements confessions conclusions covenant and agreements were comprised and contained set down and specified according to the meaning of all parties thereunto and that the complainants and defendants inter-changably sealed and delivered as their deeds each to other one part of the said indenture and the complainants did then show and produce to this honourable Court the part of the said indenture sealed with the defendant's seals the tenor substance effect and content thereof follow in hec verba
