ST MARY'S, THRELKELD

ST JOHN'S IN THE VALE

AND

WYTHBURN

Though at one time separate parishes (and before that parts of the two very large and ancient parishes of Greystoke and Crosthwaite) these three churches are now served by one rector who also serves as Chaplain and Manager of the Diocesan Youth Centre next to St John's.

St Mary's Church is in the centre of Threlkeld Village.

Wythburn Church is all that remains of Wythburn village (drowned by the reservoir) at the south end of Thirlmere on the way to Grasmere.

In former times there have been other places of worship.

The Quarry owners not only built a school in their village but also a Methodist Chapel for their workers.

The Keswick Christian Workers Band (who built several chapels in the area) built the Mission Room in 1885 - it was specifically undenominational and held its activities at times that did not clash with other churches. They also built a Mission Room at Legburthwaite in St John's in the Vale parish.

There was another Methodist Chapel at Scales.
