THE BLENCATHRA CENTRE

High on the side of Blencathra is a group of buildings known as The Blencathra Centre. It is owned by the Lake District National Park Authority but run by the Field Studies Council as an educational centre. LDNPA have offices there too.

Prior to the 1900s there was a farm there know variously as Faulds or Far End Row. In 1904 the site was acquired (with Middle Row farm next door) to provide a Sanatorium for Tuberculosis patients. In 1976 it became a hostel and in 1993 The Field Studies Council took over.

The Centre provides a wide range of courses of general interest and can tailor courses to the needs of groups.

The LDNP Senior Ranger for the area - Val Edmundson - is based at the Centre.

On Good Friday 2004 the Field Studies Council held an Open Day with eggciting activities for the children and the the more mature (the lady at the top of the climbing wall is being watched by her grandchildren at the bottom!)
