SEVENTH GENERATION

56. Timothy MARTIN was born on 3 Nov 1761 in Dockray, Matterdale, CUL, ENG. He was christened on 3 Dec 1761. He died on 20 Jan 1838 in Merthyr Tydfil, GLA, WLS, and is buried Merthyr Tydfil. (Death: per Wilkins Iron, Steel and Tinplate died at Penydarren 26 Jan 1838)

He left Cumberland pre 1795 with his first cousin Edward MARTIN and, having trained at the Whingill Collieries, Whitehaven, came to Swansea as mining engineer.

He moved to Penydarren Ironworks as Mine Agent to the Homfrays. It is highly likely that he was a passenger on the first steam hauled railway train in February 1804 when Richard Trevithick's locomotive hauled 10 tons of iron and 70 passengers from the work to the canal at Abercynon.

He married Mary GREY (daughter of Morgan GREY and Hannah) on 19 Jan 1795 at Llangyfelach, GLA, WLS. Mary GREY was born on 19 Aug 1772 in Clyndu, GLA, WLS. She died on 1 Jul 1823 in Merthyr Tydfil, GLA, WLS. Timothy MARTIN and Mary GREY had the following children:

126 i. Benjamin MARTIN was born on 29 Oct 1795 in Llansamlet, GLA, WLS. Occupation: Succeeded his father Timothy as Mine Agent to the Homfrays at Penydarren. ( per Wilkins History of the Iron, Steel and Tinplate Trades: prominent in connection with the industries of Swansea, of Penydarren and of Dowlais. Resided at Gwaunfarren. For many years Manager at Penydarren.)
127 ii. Christopher MARTIN was born on 5 May 1797 in Llansamlet, GLA, WLS. He died on 16 Dec 1833 in Merthyr Tydfil, GLA, WLS.
128 iii. Mary MARTIN was born on 24 Dec 1798 in Loughor, GLA, WLS.
129 iv. Timothy MARTIN was born on 29 Sep 1800 in Loughor, GLA, WLS. He died on 2 Jun 1826 in Merthyr Tydfil, GLA, WLS.
130 v. Jane MARTIN was born on 1 Jan 1801 in Loughor, GLA, WLS.
131 vi. Elizabeth MARTIN was born on 6 Nov 1804 in Merthyr Tydfil, GLA, WLS. She died on 16 Feb 1806 in Merthyr Tydfil, GLA, WLS.
132 vii. Edward MARTIN was born on 8 Dec 1806 in Merthyr Tydfil, GLS, WLS. He died on 15 Oct 1892. He had no family.
