SUPPORT FOR KESWICK MUSEUM REDEVELOPMENT

Friday, September 1, 2006

ALLERDALE Borough Council’s Executive Committee this week gave its full support to the redevelopment plans for Keswick Museum and Art Gallery.

This is a crucial step towards securing a viable future for the much-loved attraction.

The committee’s recommendation for support needs to be formally endorsed by a meeting of the Full Council later this month.

Confirmation would mean that work could begin on the next phase of the £3.5m project.

This would involve the preparation of a detailed business plan, architectural designs, and funding package. Allerdale Borough Council would be investing £490,000 towards the project, with the remainder of the funds to be sourced externally.

The result would be the creation of an exciting heritage attraction for Keswick, which would build upon the town’s growing reputation as a leading cultural centre, said Project Manager Peter Fox.

Coun. David Thomas, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member with responsibility for Tourism, added: “We have reached a major point in the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery’s history.

“The opportunity for making it a successful and leading visitor destination lies with the enterprising and imaginative band of volunteers: the doers.

“They have the opportunity to show that Keswick and its museum are forward thinking and ready to meet the challenge of modern tourism demands.”
