KESWICK MUSEUM AND
ART GALLERYwas founded in 1873 and had several temporary homes as it grew. On
11th April 1898 the building to house the collection in Fitz Park was opened
as both a memorial to two distinguished Keswick benefactors, the Hewetson brothers,
and a commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It has the distinction
of being the first purpose built museum in Cumbria. From 1882 the Museum and
the Fitz Park were both held as a charitable trust for the enjoyment of “the
inhabitants of Keswick and the visitors thereto”. The Art Gallery was
opened in July 1906, as a result of the efforts of Canon Rawnsley, a Museum
Trustee and one of the founders of the National Trust. Since 1994 the Museum
and the Fitz Park Trusts have been separated and held by different Trustees.
The FRIENDS OF KESWICK
MUSEUM was formed in June 2003 at a time when the future of the Museum had reached
another milestone, that of a possible change of Trustees. Now local people have
the chance to take over the Trust and bring new life into it. The Friends have
been established to support the Museum both now and in the future.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Our aim is to ensure the continuation of the Museum and its development into
a viable, enduring cultural resource that the people of Keswick and district
will be proud of and that all visitors to Keswick and the surrounding area will
strive to see. Our objectives are:
| 1. | to increase awareness of the Museum and its collection by advertising, media coverage and other publicity. |
| 2. | to encourage, support and promote its work and activities now and in the future. |
