The Last (for the time being) Meet of the Blencathra Foxhounds

Thursday 17th February 2005
(For our overseas visitors - an Act of Parliament making Hunting with Dogs illegal came into force at midnight)

(Pack History)

The following pictures (click on pic for larger version) were taken at the Kennels and mainly on Doddick Fell.

The supporters gather at the Kennels - Note the Fallen Stock Truck - who will deal with this when there are no hunts?

It had been raining earlier but the day was to be bright and dry

The Huntsman Barry Todhunter. Barry has been with the Blencathra since 1873 first as whip but since 1988 as Huntsman

More supporters - young and more mature! There were well over 100 in total.

Yet another photo opportunity - for the Gentlemen of the Press. We are up Gate Ghyll on the outwash from the Elizabethan mine.

Barry Todhunter - "tod" is a Lakeland word for "fox"

There are hounds in this pic...

... and in this one, with a hatless Barry

Hounds in Doddick Gill being led by a fox that crossed the beck two feet in front of the leading hound, but by the time he disappeared over Hall's Fell he was two hundred yards ahead.

On the following Saturday, (after the Act came into force) supporters met at Gate Ghyll and walked through the Village to Riddings - home of "Squire" John Crosier for some sixty years. Some 200 or so supporters followed the pack through the Village and gathered at Riddings.
